Nerdisms with Nerdette: Yandere/Yangire
Hello and welcome to Nerdisms with Nerdette. This is a blog thingie that I thought I'd do explaining tropes within the anime world, from their meaning, to examples, to anything else I can think of. What is a Nerdism? A fun little word I just made up that describes nerdy tropes.
Now the words of the week is Yandere and Yangire. This one is the one I was asked the most about in the IRC Chat, so I might as well make this the first one. A yandere and yangire are very similar to one an other, essentially cute but psycho, the only difference is really their motivation, so I'll tell you how to spot them apart easily.
A yanderes possess a very stalker-esque personality, doing all of these horrifying an cruel things for their beloved, typically their 'onii-san'. They seem like an adorable person that you just want to hug, but don't be fooled by that innocent smile, because a true monster lies underneath that human flesh. Think Reimi Odajima from Bamboo Blae and her very disturbing obsession with MiyaMiya. she is a good example, but we usually never see the 'cute' side of her so I can't say she's a typical example. A yandere is motivated purely by their obsession with someone, doing all of these horrible things to assure no one takes away their victim or to assure the victim will cave in to their needs.
One could easily say yandere is the creepiest of the two tropes, but the yangire just may be the most deadly. A yangire is the same as a yandere, except minus the obsession bit. Think Vix Rena from When They Cry, she turns into creepy killer, but doesn't obsess over anyone truly. Sure in the first story arc she payed a lot of attention to Keichi but she never seemed to obsess over him in the yandere-way. She just switches from cute to psycho simply because you've done something to piss her right the frak off. One could also argue Hanni from Ouran Host Club is one too, but I doubt morning crankiness would result in him brutally murdering something.
So I hope that filled in some light on these two tropes, next week shall be kuudere and dandere! Tell me what you all think; should I go into more depth and go into long discussions on trying to figure out some character, or should I not go to deep to keep from boring you all? Let me know!
This is your Nerdette, signing off~

But I'm wondering, how did you know this stuff? I mean, are you able to speak Japanese? Is there, like, an index for such things?
Haha, I like that. "Murdering something." That's a little strange. You mean like someone? LOL, that's pretty sketchy.
Nah, I prefer these things short. Makes them easier to read, as long as you get to the point. And examples are nice, too.
